Welcome to Ribe Jazz Festival 2009
It's jazz festival time again!
Friday July 24 - Sunday July 26.
This year the conditions caused more than common tumultish feelings.
At the beginning no one could tell if the festival could survive
due to a huge deficit.
But along with the spring and persistent people preparing the
way, among others they arranged an aid concert of great quality
with a fantastic local support, then we could dimly see the light
at the end of the tunnel.
Since then people have been working hard to get things done in
time. Now everything is done and ready! And what a program! This
year we have brought together many of our most loyal musicians
throughout the years, added a couple of new names and now we can
breathe again.
Niels Løkkegaard has formed 'Festival Ensemble' for the
occasion which is a special gift for all of us. The band includes
a number of the best Ribe musicians who have all solid music careers.
They will be playing Friday night and succeeds to Jesper Ry Quartet
which is another scoop of the year featuring Nikolaj Bentzon (p),
Niclas Campagnol (dr) and Claus Waidtløw (sax).
Gunde On Garner is on the program Saturday night and plays the
way Erroll Garner would have done. Later that night we present
Sinne Eeg who we have been listening to with great joy , watching
her formidable career. Today she is one of the greatest jazz singers
in Denmark. She will be accompanied by RARE Species, a fantastic
band led by Casper Mikkelsen behind the drums.
On the last day of the festival we proudly present two of the
best jazz guitarists in Denmark, Jens Christian Kwella at the
free jazz brunch at Danhostel Ribe, and Jacob Fischer who will
play at the closing concert at Hotel Dagmar.
But apart from the mentioned musicians Ribe Jazz Festival 2009
includes a number of many great bands: Blicher Rifbjerg Vang,
Brian Svendsen, Big Band Ribe and a flood of young talents from
both the Academy Of Music and MGK (which is an advanced music
school).
JazzEsbjerg, our brother jazz club, is lending a hand this year
arranging a concert on the Academy Stage presenting Thor Madsen
Trio, a fantastic band! We are happy about the teamwork with JazzEsbjerg,
ordinarily as well as during the festival.
So Ribe Jazz Festival 2009 is a strong mix of Danish and international
jazz names and young talents. This year we got two stages for
young musicians, The Academy Stage at The Old Customs Yard and
MGK-stage in the garden of Café Valdemar.
Make yourself comfortable and be seated, we have provided genuine
music experiences for 3 days and we will do our best so that the
audience, musicians, venues and the local people will have a good
festival.
